Using the vocational profile - a guide for young people, parents and professionals in Southend
The Southend Vocational Profile is a person-centred tool designed to help young people explore and share their interests, strengths, aspirations, and support needs. It supports planning for education, employment, and independent living as part of the Preparing for Adulthood pathway.
Who is it for?
- young people aged 14 to 25
- parents and carers supporting their child's journey
- professionals involved in education, health, social care, and careers guidance
How to Use the Vocational Profile
Step 1: access the Profile
You can:
- download it from the Southend Careers Service website
- view a plain text versions on the following pages
- request a copy from your school or college
- ask your SENCO or careers advisor for support
Step 2: complete the Profile together
The profile works best when completed collaboratively. Young people should be supported to:
- reflect on their interests, strengths and goals
- identify what support they need to achieve their aspirations
- share their views in their own words
Parents and professionals can help by:
- encouraging open conversations
- listening actively and without judgement
- helping record information clearly and respectfully
All young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) in Southend-on-Sea will be supported by a special educational needs and disabilities specialist Careers Advisor to complete their Vocational Profile. This will take place either at their educational setting or via appointment at The Forum Library in Southend.
Step 3: use the Profile in planning
Once completed, the profile can be used to:
- inform EHCP reviews and transition planning
- shape career pathways and work experience opportunities
- guide discussions in multi-agency meetings
It should be shared with relevant professionals (with consent) to ensure joined-up support.
Step 4: keep it updated
The Vocational Profile is a living document. It should be reviewed:
- at least annually
- whenever there's a significant change (for example, new interests, goals, or support needs)
young people should be encouraged to take ownership of their profile and update it as they grow. The downloadable version of the Vocational Profile is an editable PDF which can be downloaded to the young person's phone or mobile device.
