Southend Libraries have lots of resources for families with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and everyone is welcome to join Southend Libraries.

Bag Books

Interactive sensory stories for children, teens and adults with physical and learning disabilities who may not benefit from mainstream books. They consist of A3 card pages with sounds, things to feel and smell.

Super Reads

Dyslexia-friendly stories with short chapters and great stories.

Comic style or just illustration heavy ‘Picture Books for Older Readers' (look out for the yellow ‘O’ sticker).

Situation books

To help with new experiences, e.g. starting school, going to the hospital/ doctor.

Audio books

Some on CD, many more online via the BorrowBox App – free to use with your library card.

Parent's Collection

Books to help with all aspects of parent, from birth to teens.

Book loans

You can borrow 14 items for 3 weeks (and then renew if you're not finished). There are no late fines for children's books, and there are Children's PCs available in every library.

There are 6 Southend libraries across the City, all accessible and with lifts, if not on the ground floor.

Toilets/ baby and toddler changing areas are available.

Disabled toilets are at the Forum and Shoebury libraries, and the Forum has a Changing Places Toilet.
