Did you know Southend Libraries have lots of resources for families with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and everyone is welcome to join Southend Libraries.

Storysacks

Make reading fun with a Storysack, an interactive storytelling and activity pack (for ages 6 months to 5 years).

Search ‘Storysack’ at https://southend.spydus.co.uk to reserve a pack from the range available. Dual language sacks are also available.

Little Story Stars

A fun reading incentive for families with 0 to 5 year olds to share books throughout the year. Borrow books, read together, collect stickers and a certificate with a chance to win an extra reward.

Bookstart packs for young children with additional needs

  • Bookstart Shine for children who are deaf
  • Bookstart Touch for children who are registered as blind
  • Bookstart Star for children with conditions affecting their fine motor skills

Contact bookstart@southend.gov.uk if you haven't received a pack through your Health practitioner.

Let's Get Ready for School bags

Stories and activities to help with starting school. Each bag includes storybooks about starting school, fun games to play together and top tips to get ready to learn. Borrow from any Southend Library.

Saturday Relaxed Storyrhyme sessions

These are held at Westcliff library on the last Saturday of each month. Come along to a free half hour interactive session and enjoy the library, stories and rhymes without the pressure of social expectations. No need to book.

Book loans

You can borrow 14 items for 3 weeks (and then renew if you're not finished). There are no late fines for children's books, and there are Children's PCs available in every library.

Venue notes

There are 6 Southend libraries across the City, all accessible and with lifts, if not on the ground floor.

Toilets/ baby and toddler changing areas are available.

Disabled toilets are at the Forum and Shoebury libraries, and the Forum has a Changing Places Toilet.
