Sensory Service

We provide support for people living in Southend-on-Sea with:

  • sight loss
  • hearing loss
  • both (dual sensory loss)

Our aim is to help you:

  • live independently
  • improve your wellbeing and quality of life

You will have an assessment to see what support you need.

Support for sight loss (visual impairment)

Who can use this service

You can use this service if:

  • you have sight loss
  • it affects your daily life

You do not need to be registered as sight impaired.

Assessment

If an eye specialist confirms your sight loss:

  • you may receive a Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI)
  • we will contact you when we receive it
  • you can choose whether to be registered
  • we will offer you an assessment

Support available

We can support you with:

  • information about local services
  • training to help you stay independent
  • support at home and when out in the community

Mobility and safety

  • using a white cane
  • crossing roads
  • learning new routes
  • shopping
  • using public transport

Daily living and communication

  • reading and writing
  • accessing the right equipment
  • improving lighting and home safety

We can also refer you to other services for extra support.

Low vision support

You may get help with magnifiers at:

  • the Low Vision Clinic at Southend Hospital

Ask your GP for a referral if needed.

Support for hearing loss

Who can use this service

You can use this service if:

  • you have permanent and significant hearing loss
  • it affects your daily life

Assessment

You can:

  • refer yourself
  • ask your GP, audiology service, or social worker to refer you

After referral:

  • we will contact you
  • offer an assessment
  • discuss registration

Support available

We can help with:

  • information about services and activities
  • referrals to other support organisations

Safety equipment

  • alert systems (for example, doorbells or alarms)
  • devices to help at home

Communication support

  • using a phone
  • speaking with others
  • watching TV

Support for dual sensory loss

Who can use this service

You may be eligible if you:

  • have both sight and hearing loss
  • are affected in your daily life (for example, communication or mobility)

You do not need to be registered as sight impaired.

Assessment

If you have difficulties due to combined sight and hearing loss:

  • you can be referred to the OT Sensory Team
  • you may also be referred to an audiologist for hearing support

Support available

After assessment, support may include:

  • information about local services
  • specialist equipment
  • help with communication
  • training in daily living skills
  • support to access leisure activities
  • referrals to other services

Registration

You can choose to join the dual sensory register.

This helps the Council:

  • understand local needs
  • plan better services

You do not have to register.

Support is still available if you choose not to.
