Jade Weller is a Youth Participation Worker dedicated to amplifying the voices of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Based in Southend-on-Sea, England, Jade's role is as diverse as the young people she serves.
"No two days are the same," Jade explains. "Last month, I was at the Sealife Centre with our Care Experienced Group, then at an Elective Home Education Event, and finally in a meeting with the council's transport team." Her days are filled with a whirlwind of activities, all centred around ensuring that young people with SEND have a platform to express their needs and preferences.
While Jade's current position is relatively new, she brings years of experience working with local councils. Her passion for working directly with young people led her to this rewarding role. "I love getting out and about and meeting a wide range of people," she says. "It's incredibly fulfilling to see the impact we can have on their lives."
If she could change anything about her job or SEND services, Jade would prioritise putting the child's voice at the centre of everything. "Their experiences and perspectives should guide our work," she emphasises. "We need to create a system that truly listens and responds to their needs."
When she's not advocating for young people, Jade enjoys spending quality time with her children and taking advantage of the seaside lifestyle. "I'm a year-round sea swimmer," she shares. "It's a great way to relax and recharge."
Jade's dedication to her role is evident in her enthusiasm and commitment to making a difference. As a Youth Participation Worker, she's not just a job title; she's a champion for young people with SEND, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met.
