High blood pressure often has no symptoms, but it can increase your risk of serious health conditions such as heart attack and stroke.
That's why Know Your Numbers Week is encouraging everyone to take a few minutes to check their blood pressure and understand what their numbers mean.
Why checking your blood pressure matters
High blood pressure is sometimes called a "silent killer" because most people do not experience any symptoms. The only way to know if your blood pressure is high is to have it checked.
Knowing your numbers can help you take action early and reduce your risk of developing serious health problems.

Follow these tips for taking an accurate reading:
- Rest for a few minutes before taking your reading.
- Sit comfortably with your back supported.
- Keep your feet flat on the floor.
- Support your arm at heart level.
- Stay still and avoid talking while the measurement is being taken.
- Use the correct cuff size for your arm.
