Last week, the Civic Centre welcomed more than 80 young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) from 7 local schools for an engaging and interactive Careers Day.

Students from Years 8 to 10 took part in a range of hands-on activities delivered by teams from across the Council, giving them a valuable insight into the variety of careers and roles available within local government.

The day provided opportunities for young people to explore different work environments, develop their understanding of the world of work, and build confidence through meaningful interactions with Council employees.

A popular highlight of the event was the speed networking sessions, where students spoke directly with staff from a wide range of professions. Council service stands showcased the diverse opportunities available across the organisation and helped bring different career pathways to life.

The event also featured a marketplace of local employers, colleges, and training providers, all offering information on inclusive education, training, and employment pathways designed to support young people with SEND in achieving their future aspirations.

Feedback from schools was overwhelmingly positive, with one school commenting:

"It was a great event and our students were fully engaged and inspired by the opportunities out there".

The event was a fantastic example of partnership working to raise aspirations, broaden horizons, and help young people with SEND begin thinking about their future education, training, and employment opportunities.
