Award certificate from the Antibiotic Guardian Shared Learning Awards.

Southend-on-Sea City Council’s Public Health team, have won a prestigious national award at the Antibiotic Guardian Shared Learning Awards, in the Children and Family category.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) East of England Health Protection Operations team, working in collaboration with Southend-on-Sea City Council’s Public Health team, have won a prestigious national award at the Antibiotic Guardian Shared Learning Awards, in the Children and Family category.

The Awards champion organisations and individuals who have demonstrated achievements in tackling antimicrobial resistance - whether in their local area, across wider regions, or throughout the country.

The award won recognises the innovative project, "Raising Awareness of AMR in Children and Young People and those that Care for them," which used a range of creative methods to help people better understand and prevent antibiotic resistance in everyday life.

The initiative, delivered across Southend-on-Sea, engaged schools, families and educators through a comprehensive Tools for Schools toolkit. One of the notable interventions was the creative and engaging "Hideous History of Cringey Cures" session, which brought the topic of AMR to life for children and families, particularly those who are educated at home.

By combining education, creativity and community involvement, the project raised awareness of the risks of antibiotic misuse and the importance of responsible antibiotic use among young people and their caregivers.

Krishna Ramkhelawon, Southend’s Director of Public Health, said:

“We’re thrilled to receive this recognition. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of engaging children and families in the fight against AMR. Working alongside the UKHSA East of England Health Protection Operations team has been instrumental in delivering this impactful programme.”

The award highlights the growing importance of community-led public health education in addressing global health challenges.
