The universal offer to schools and how to access

  • Verbo: online speech and language platform offering screening tools and environment audits alongside staff training on a range of speech language and communication needs (SLCN). Schools can request support to use Verbo/carry out joint screeners to identify children and young people (CYP) with needs. How to access - Verbo sign up link.   • Ask the SALT: monthly training session on Teams on a range of SLCN topics. Request training calendar by emailing SENDtherapies@southend.gov.uk
  • SALT (Speech and Language Therapy) advice line: access on-the-spot advice for specific queries or general signposting - available Monday to Friday 9:30am to 11:30am. Call 01702 578601.
  • Websites for Southend schools to access further support: EPUT website (Children's Speech and Language Therapy pages) and Essex Padlet for primary schools.
  • Every school has a Link SALT who can advise on universal adaptations to environments and provide training on universal SLCN strategies. Your link therapist will liaise with your school at least termly to meet with the SENCO and discuss your schools needs. Please email slteducationqueries@nhs.net for Link SALT details.

The targeted offer to schools and how to access

  • Verbo: after screening CYP, select targets to access resources and training videos to provide early help for emerging SLCN. How to access - Verbo sign up link. To request Verbo training or joint screening service email SENDtherapies@southend.gov.uk
  • Targeted intervention groups: request a block of up to 10 weeks of intervention groups on a range of targeted areas to be co-run in your school with a trained SALT assistant. To request targeted interventions email SENDtherapies@southend.gov.uk
  • Link SALT can offer advice and signposting to targeted interventions and training. They can deliver strategy demonstration sessions to build staff confidence, suggest groupings for children with similar targets, model group strategies, and advise on interpreting screening results in the context of individual needs (e.g. EAL, global delay). The specialist offer to schools and how to access

  • Referrals to SALT should be made after discussion with your link SALT. Specialist assessment and interventions will be provided as required either in your school or clinic depending on the nature of the needs of the individual. How to acess - SALT referral form.
  • Link SALT will be able to provide strategy demonstration sessions to support school staff to work with CYP with more complex SLCN. Please email slteducationqueries@nhs.net for Link SALT details.
