Ready to Work is a targeted support programme for young people aged 16 to 19 (or up to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities) who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).
It is run in collaboration by Southend Adult Community College and Southend YMCA.
The programme offers:
- confidence building and motivation
- employability skills (CVs, applications and interviews)
- Functional Skills support (English and Maths)
- workplace behaviour and expectations
- career exploration and goal-setting
- 1 to 1 tailored support
- support into employment, training or further education
- life skills sessions focusing on independence, communication, time management, wellbeing, and preparing for every day adult responsibilities
How does it work?:

- flexible approach tailored to each young person

- this is a 6 week programme with the option to stay on for 1 year
- attendance 3 days per week (maximum of 4 days)
- sessions start no earlier than 10am
- referrals are accepted throughout the year

The programme is for young people aged 16 to 19 (or up to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities) who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) and are:
- supported by SEND services
- open to the Virtual School
- involved with Youth Justice
- referred via Southend Careers Service
For professionals: if you have a young person in mind who meets the criteria, please note that referral forms are held and must be completed by a Youth Justice, Virtual School, SEND, or Southend Careers Service professional.
